The branch first came into existence in 1928. It was then called the Swansea and District Branch, and was active for most of the last century. Some years ago, the branch became inactive due to committee members leaving Swansea etc. We have now relaunched the branch as the South West Wales Branch. The launch was celebrated on the 27th October 2011, with a speech by Prof Emeritus Ceri Davies (Swansea University) and a talk by famous children's author Caroline Lawrence, on her books The Roman Mysteries.
Our logo connects the Argonautic ram with the Welsh dragon (in a – to some minds apparently – slightly mischievous way, but hey, what’s wrong with that?!), with the dragon guiding the ram into the future and a strong focus on the children (though it has been suggested they could easily be Welsh miners too, because of the hats…) This, then, is our mission statement: reconnecting South West Wales with its Classical roots.
The Secretary was asked to write a blog post about the branch for the blog of the national Classical Association. You can find it here: http://classicalassociation.org/Blog/?p=193.

Events and Classes
Our branch holds regular events in collaboration with, among others, the Department of History and Classics at Swansea University and the Historical Association (Swansea Branch). These range from talks about aspects of the ancient world to practical workshops and quizzes. We also offer Latin, Greek, and other Classics-inspired classes for the community. Your school can get involved in our Literacy through Classics programme (see www.literacythroughclassics.weebly.com). You can come visit Swansea University with a school group or we can arrange for a member of staff to visit your school to give a talk or workshop. Funding We are very grateful for funding received from the Classical Association, the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies, the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies, the Friends of Classics, and the College of Arts and Humanities (Swansea University). Without their continuing support, this branch would not be able to exist. All our profit goes integrally to the Literacy through Classics project. |
We hope to see you at one of our events soon! Don't
hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or
if you would like to get involved - or have an idea
about a nice event you'd like us to host.
Vale!
